1973 - Start with possibly one of the most revered albums ever made that was also considered defining for the surround mix that arguably initially led people to surround systems.
Let it go out of print.
2003 - Let's make a new mix for this outlier surround format (SACD) that makes the album more stereo and less surround. Don't include the original mix on the disc.
2023 - We have a new 12 channel surround format and delivery now! 7.1.4. Hang those 4 extra speakers from your ceiling and get ready! So let's release a 7.1.4 (Atmos) remix of DSOTM that has less sound in motion than the original stereo mix! EQ it to sound flat and subdued too like a generational tape copy. Don't include the original mix on the disc.
2023 - Now let's have Roger turn it into a new solo album with his poetry sans music approach.

I just must not be the target audience here!

Don't feel bad, I think a lot of us are just not feeling this.

In my opinion, Roger created this release looking through the prism of Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451.

I have to disappoint you - there is the original mix layer on the 2003 SACD release

And the original quad surround mix is not in it!

Got a proper listen of the whole thing this morning, and I really enjoyed it. I was a bit hesitant going into it with how all the spoken word stuff would fit together from what we’d heard before, but largely I was pleased with it. The instrumentation is lovely and Roger’s voice is right where it needs to be at the age of 80. The creaky, bone-dry production is exactly what I’d expect from a project of this kind. It’s a very reflective piece as a whole and clearly isn’t supposed to compare, let alone compete, with the original. Via Mardot’s theremin is a highlight for me, I’ve been following her since long before I was aware she was involved with this and it’s heartwarming to see her career ascend to the point that it has.

The only tracks I didn’t care much for were OTR and ACYL. The string section bit in OTR wasn’t exactly jarring, but it did seem out of place. On ACYL I really lost the plot with the narration. I’m not sure I’d prefer it instrumental, but the electron microscopes and rainbows took me out of it for a bit.

Overall, there were some genuinely beautiful moments that nearly brought a tear to my eye. I’m grateful that we’re getting a proper celebration of the album beyond the $300 cardboard cash grab we got earlier this year. Very bold of Roger to do a project like this. I understand that some think well enough should be left alone, but this simply isn’t for those people, and that’s perfectly fine. Personally I’ve heard the original so many times that I don’t even want to anymore.

This one will be in my regular rotation for a while.
This is a great well-rounded summation of what I think as well. I find the production here magnificent and agree this will be in heavy rotation for awhile.

I'm mesmerized and in awe of this thing. Love it. I do think that the second half where the spoken word bits are more subtle might have more staying power - we'll see how it wears over the next few months. There is something almost Ken Nordine-like about ACYL.

This is horrible. Even on songs where he doesn’t add unnecessary words, like Us & Them, all of the urgency of the lyrics during the chorus is lost due to his low energy delivery. I don’t care that he’s 80…if you can’t do it then leave it alone.

There are like 100 different live releases of all of these songs where they do them exactly like the album. I don't see the horror in having one additional version that isn't like the original album.

If you like it, enjoy. I wouldn't disparage anyone's music tastes but...

Roger is doing his own cash grab here as well. T-shirts for $41, $46 for a Transparent Orange (??) double vinyl, $15 for a gold coloured cassette and a ton of free publicity on the heels of the official released anniversary set.

I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected. I thought it would be a bad idea by someone with fragile high self esteem but it turns out a rather successful idea by someone with fragile high self esteem.

Pretty standard going rates for a new release vs. $300 for ~10 discs of the same thing that’s been available for 50 years with an incomplete concert that’s been available for over a decade and a slightly different surround mix that the average consumer will never listen to. Not exactly comparable in my eyes. You can guess which one I chose to spend my money on.

I’m sure the publishers have more to do with the cost than anything else, but my point is that we’re getting something new other than the obscenely lazy set the band already put out.

It looks like the soundscape of the Pulse cassette with Waters speaking.
