Streaming audio from NAS to receiver

I need some A/V help from the group.

My setup to listen to shows is a Synology NAS (Using Media Server) > Onkyo Tx-NR6050 through my wired LAN network. It works well for normal FLAC files but it doesn't play the multi-channel 5.1 encoded shows. As I understand it, the Synology NAS only outputs in stereo anyway.

Do I need to go NAS > NUC + server software > receiver? Most articles I've read mention outputting over HDMI but none of my computer boxes have more than one HDMI port. The only dedicated audio output is the headphone jack.

    What other solutions are there?

You certainly could do it with a NUC. I personally use a Nvidia Shield Pro connected to my HT system to enjoy surround. It works well for both audio and video.

So I'll have to try the PC > HDMI > Receiver > PC Monitor route. I think I have some long cables to go back and forth as they are on opposite sides of my office.

Later that same day... The HDMI worked, will need to reconfigure office and receiver inputs as I've labeled and re-labled them so many times.
