    Fingal's Cave Podcast Episode #3 - Derek T. "I became a bit fanatical”

    Hello Everybody !

We just released a new edition of our Podcast! Even we are quite sure that all of you already know Derek T...for those who don't know him, Derek was one of the first and most important people to be associated with Pink Floyd in London in the early 70's. the stories he has to tell are not only extraordinary and impressive, they transport you directly to the heyday of Pink Floyd.

    About the Episode:
In this episode, we talk to Pink Floyd recording pioneer Derek T.

Derek, whose love of the band began when he listened to the live sides of Ummagumma in 1969, was present at many significant Pink Floyd gigs in their heyday.

He shares his concert memories with our host, Ian Priston, and explains the 1970s vinyl bootleg industry and attempts to stamp it out. Derek took over a tiny record shop in Marlborough Court, just off Carnaby Street, London, in 1973, where he would encounter various classic titles such as The Best of Tour ’72.

At one point you’ll hear Derek talking about an Elvis impersonator at the Crystal Palace concert on 15 May 1971, and this did indeed happen. Derek also acknowledges the loss of his good friend, Syd Barrett specialist Bernard White, in tragic circumstances.

Later he talks about his experience of Knebworth ’75 and going to the 1977 Wembley concerts. The enigmatic Jesus Jellett is mentioned and Derek explains racing driver James Hunt’s connection to The Wall shows.

Derek then moves on to his key Pink Floyd archival achievement, filming excerpts of multiple The Wall concerts in England and Germany in 1980 and 1981 from different vantage points on a Super 8 camera. Derek subsequently edited his footage highlights together to form a complete concert production.

We would like to thank Vincenzo Gatti for his work on mastering the sound.

That record store in Marlborough Court off Carnaby Street was where I began my own boot collection, also with "Best of Tour '72"! Tiny place, but I remember it fondly. I look forward to listening to this one.

            Wonderful episode!

I hope everybody has the opportunity to wander into a record shop and buy a Pink Floyd bootleg. It was a huge part of my early years!

No, but I did visit the shop down a very narrow street. I found the photo on t'internet when I Googled it this morning. Great podcast by the way. I'm currently halfway through it. Very interesting man. Re the BPI visits, my friend who accompanied me to some of my early PF shows, joined the Met police. He used to buy boots from Derek too. I wonder if Derek would have sold them to him if he'd know he was a policeman? :-)

Derek would be very amused by your post Simon, so I have passed it on

After listening to the podcast I realize that I must have been dealing with Derek himself. I was amongst the large crowd he describes as descending on his shop during Zeppelin's 1975 Earls Court residency - it was my first visit to his place. Thanks, Simond, for uploading that photo - much appreciated!

Here's a detailed article on the character 'Jesus'. I saw him once around 1970, 'preaching' at Hyde Park Corner

I actually got my first bootleg from Ebay, it was Oakland 77 that I bought for a stupid amount of money and then I sought out more and ended up finding there was a whole community who shared it for free! In Chicago we have a little record shop that sells bootlegs - I dont buy bootlegs but he does have a lot of things other than bootlegs that are rare that I have bought. But its always good to see Floyd stuff in record shops nonetheless.
