Making covers

Hi folks,

As I slowly sort out my collection I am seeing quite a few boots that do not have covers
I don't have a lot of time to devote to it but I might like to give it a shot and maybe I can give something back to the community if any were adopted

The problem I have is source material, obviously if I am going to make an effort I want to start with 300dpi/large resolution files as sources
Looking around a couple of users files on echoeshub I see some photos here and there and some logos too

Any other good resources that anyone knows of - maybe fonts as well if you anyone has any?

I won't make any promises but I will give it a shot and see if I can do one and what people think

Obviously people have made covers in the past so hoping there are some basics I can start with

There is a Tumblr page/account called "More Echoes" that has a lot of photographs. I recently looked at the site and Tumblr has introduced some sort of limit to how many posts you can view without a free account. The user helpfully uses tags to give photos a bit of metadata, so you could see any posts for '1971' photos or photos taken in Paris, etc.

I like to use a picture from the tour if not the exact date.

Of course, being a digital affair and I’m largely listening on my phone, I don’t do it as often as I used to. Everything’s already alphabetized and at most I’d see the 2”x2” artwork for about a second.

Seconded. Why bother? CDs are obsolete for the most part these days. The only thing high-res photos would do for me is take up more space on my drive. As long as I have the music, I have all I need.

That said, I do sort of miss the boots I used to get at independent music retailers and record shows, and the accompanying artwork with all the inaccurate info. I love torrents, but younger generations will never know the thrill and excitement that I felt when I finally tracked down that copy of Staying Home To Watch The Rain (1972-09-22) on the Great Dane label, or the satisfaction I got from listening to it over and over and over again.

But torrents certainly beat the hell out of paying $50 for a double CD set. Thank you, R&D, Yeeshkul!, Dimeadozen, TTD, and Zomb for all the great shows. And RIP Mike of Mike's Music in Sanford, ME who found me that Great Dane set. Miss you and your store, bud.

Because even though CDs are no longer used, programs that archive and organize music folders also illustrate the content. It would be great if instead of saying no illustration and unknown artist, it had a nice 50 kb image that wouldn't fill a modern hard drive at all... unless it's 100 MB.

Its still nice to have some kind of image but I guess hi-res isn't that important anymore

I use a Sony NW-ZX1 for playing FLAC files when I’m out. I’ve used the relative ticket image for each show, where available. Many can be displayed with either little or no cropping and those awkward elongated tickets, I crop centred around the band name. I’ve used this for the 100+ Floyd shows I carry around along with another 50 or so other bands' gigs. They look really great scrolling down them and the few shows where no ticket is available I’ve opted to use one from as close a date as possible.

Thank you, and when used in this way there’s no great need for 300dpi; 72dpi is fine on such a small display.
