Crumbling shows how they could have become an awful west coast hippie band.

          I'll take 51.

related to the poll, i prefer Explosion from TEY boxset to Come in number 51...
that was pretty avant-garde, wasn't it?

Number 51 is completely shutting out the competition currently which frankly astonishes me. I expected quite the opposite given the results of the last few weeks. I actually rather enjoy Crumbling Land (which will always be Crumbling Land to me regardless of what they titled this piece on TEY).

Here too it's called Crumbling Land and since I got to know it on Omayyad I'll add that I prefer it in the slow version :-P

Not a great comparison IMO, but I understand why it's being made. Crumbling land is a fine song, nothing offensive but nothing special either. This is basically a throwaway song vs CwtAE. I obviously voted for Come In but I do enjoy CL because it's different, for them.

This is like asking if I’d rather watch Apocalypse Now or Up In Smoke

I'm definitely going to need a fantastic amount of trendy chemical amusement aid for that double feature...

So, I suppose comparing a song with actual lyrics to a song where the vocal line is...instrumental shall we say...is not exactly a fair comparison, but I've got to say it amuses me thoroughly that so far members prefer Roger's shrieking to Dave's crooning (what I consider to be some pretty clever lyrics that really took the piss out of Michaelangelo Antonioni) ten to zero. I wonder if Antonioni knew the song he was including in his film was a not-so-subtle jab at him.

This is a strange showdown. A little like -meanwhile not THAT extreme- is if you'd have to vote for Seamus or Echoes from Meddle.
I voted for CL as I really like that song. I don't see why it should show how they could have become an awful west coast hippie band.
They always did songs like that.

On the other hand CiN51 isn't exactly a genuine song but rather a new recording of another, retitled due to copyright reasons (I think).
I like CiN51 aswell, it's a nice version of CWTAE, but it's not the best.

That matchup would actually be a really tough choice for me.

So...while I've always loved #51 as a sort of stripped down version of CWTAE (which I consider to be a hallmark of Roger's bass style: that repetitive bass octave drone), I've got to give it to Crumbling Land if only for the kind of Floyd history that appeals to music nerds. You see...

As far as I'm concerned, Crumbling Land is pretty clearly a product of Pete Seeger's influence on Gilmour's guitar style. Take a listen to the video at 21:36 in and compare the picking pattern to what you hear on Crumbling Land. Maybe not exact, but similar, maybe actually more reminiscent of a banjo picking pattern, of which Seeger was also a master.

The pattern is also very similar to that of Brain Damage as well, although BD is at a much more sedate tempo, and omits the second half of the phrase.

So...while I do really love Roger's avant-garde octave exploration, I give this one to Crumbling Land by a country mile. Clever lyrics that dig at Oneone and comment on consumerism, killer vocal harmonies, the spacy sections with Rick on keys and Nick on tympani, ending with the sound of a car pulling off? You don't get much more Floydian in my opinion. The production could have been a bit better, but c'est la vie.

A real tough one, though, because the Floyd isn't the same without those octaves and that shriek either.

Plus, I happen to live in the Crumbling Land referenced in the song, and it just seems really appropriate lately.

I once bought a bootleg tape of non-album tracks with a typewritten insert where the compiler typo’d ‘Crumbling Land’ as ‘Crimbling Hand’, and clearly thought “that’ll do” instead of starting again.

I do retain a lot of affection for it - l like the traffic noises alongside the pastoral theme.

Historically, I’d seen those track titles probably years before I heard the songs so was disappointed to find ‘Come In…’ was just a remake (albeit a superior to the original remake). Was more disappointed some time later to find out it’s not even a phrase they created; it’s rare that you find an outright lift in the world of Floyd.
