Fearless (interpolating You'll Never Walk Alone)

And in the same vein as the ASCAP/BMI thread...how many members remember the track listing for Fearless on Meddle being listed as "interpolating You'll Never Walk Alone"? Back in the day, I had assumed that "interpolating" was just a fancy way of indicating a segue, but as Rick Beato explains there's actually a legal reason for listing the Rodgers and Hammerstein composition on Meddle in this way. Maybe this is old hat for some, and Beato seems disliked here, but I found this interesting and edifying even if it isn't the main point of the video.

And ultimately, who gives a fuck anyway?

On a related note...should John Prine be credited as a songwriter on The Post War Dream? It's pretty obvious to me that Rog ripped the chord progression, melody, not to mention the entire emotional tone of John Prine's song. Is it stealing? Interpolation? Or an homage?

Another perspective on the matter, not one with which I necessarily agree on all points, but interesting opinions from a musician who's retained the rights to his publishing. Obviously, interpolation is a real word and has been in usage for ages.

i always thought "interpolating" was writer-speak for "including, without musical relation" to the tune of the main song. but it seems it's just a more general "using someone else's tune, without really using it, wink wink?" as for 'the post war dream/sam stone,' i would call that a pastiche (meant as an homage, since it's a more serious take on a slightly less serious delivery of the same message)...
