SUNDAY SHOWDOWN: Childhood's End vs Free Four

ALRIGHT, R&D. MAKE SOME NOISE! This week's championship bout once again features another dueling pair of compositions from Messrs. Waters and Gilmour, both of which seem to be musings on the finality of things shall we say. In this corner...the rarely performed...CHILDHOOD"S END!!!. And in this corner...the never performed...FREE FOUR!!! It's a back-to-back album track battle this week, folks! Which composition will reign supreme and which will be sent packing? YOUR VOTE DECIDES, so VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE!

I'd like to thank Bruce Buffer for announcing this week's contest.

Gilmour makes both of these songs great and it's one of the rare occasions where his lyrics are better than Roger's. Childhood's End has always been one of my favorites and the extended live version fleshes out the original. Neither has a chorus but Free Four feels more repetitive. Childhood's End wins this round for me.

If this is going to be a regular weekly thing perhaps it would be best to contain it to a single thread? This way there would be a reference to past challenges.

Again, I love 'em both, but this one's easy for me. You get your chance to try in the twinkling of an EYE, in eighty years with luck or even less. Free Four without a doubt. 🧐

I voted for the one that isn’t musically derivative of another much better song they had already been working on.

100% Childhoods’ End, even though I love Free Four too. The live versions at Childhoods End are absolutely fab, especially the chord progression from F#m up to G#m, to A, Bm, C#m, D etc - plus the extended guitar solos! Really hoping to see a live rendition next month.

Childhood's end for me. Hate Free four. Worst track on this great album.

Tough choice for me this time. Musically, I like both. While the composition of Free Four isn't that remarkable, I like the arrangement with the bass synth stabs punctuating things. Lyrically, I find Roger's musings on the music industry a bit indulgent. He's better when he tries to be a bit more universal.

But I had to pick Childhood's End, because it's just that bit more interesting musically to me. Just a little bit less straight on the beat, amongst other things.

CE wins for me musically, easily, but I do love FF. The best line goes to FF though "The memories of a man in his old age, are the deeds of a man in his prime." I mean c'mon, thats a great line.

Yeah, please drop it. Doesn't even make sense anymore with the Zappa avatar.
