Sunday Showdown: If vs Fat Old Sun

ALRIGHT, R&D! ARE YOU READY? IT'S TIME FOR ANOTHER SUNDAY SHOWDOWN! This week's contest features two stone cold classics from Atom Heart Mother: If and Fat Old Sun. Will the Waters composition rule the roost like last week's contest? Or will the Gilmour composition reign supreme? You decide. Vote for your favorite.

Are we supposed to be voting on the live examples you posted? If so, FOS hands down.

Studio, Fat Old Sun. Never liked the live versions.

      Live, the rare If performances.

If this post is for the record versions then I'll cast my vote as soon as that's confirmed.

Frankly, I didn't mean to suggest that this was a competition between the two live versions I posted or even the album versions. I just picked my two favorite live versions of these songs. So vote for your favorite song. IMHO the "song" is the composition regardless of the arrangement or the recording.

The ‘87 version of If is certainly a creative choice to use for the poll.

As for studio versions, they both have a very similar vibe. FOS certainly has more going on, but as always, there’s something about the simplicity of Waters’ compositions. It’s a wash for me.

But yeah, for the live versions presented, FOS.

As a side note, if any Floyd album deserves a remix, it’s AHM.

in the context of a Summer Sunday wouldn't it be more interesting to compare Fat Old Sun to Love Street

        I think

FOS is kinda boring in the studio version but I really like the live version. I like if in the studio more but FOS is just a killer live song

Note to self: next time...post the poll, then smoke the bowl.

I really enjoy "Fat Old Sun" from Remember that Night (London 2006); Gilmour's rhythmic solo is tasteful as always, yet rather unlike him.

Fat Old Sun. The live versions are amazing. Also the first song I really learned to play on guitar.

I did once use some lyrics from If to apologise to a girlfriend for a 'lost weekend'... Cheers Rog!

it’s strange, i think If is a better song structurally, but goddamn do David and Rick tear it up at the end. i especially like the solo David plays in the Remember That Night live version, he just goes to town on that Tele and it sounds so energetic and fun
