Potential Photos BBC Paris Theatre 30th September 1971

James Floyd at Pink Floyd Collectors Group has posted a couple of photos and magazine spread along with his convincing reasoning that they were taken at the BBC 30.09.71 recording.

well, they look great; it's great to have a photo in mind when I will listen again to this jawdropping performance.
Do you think that there is a photo where the band is actually playing without the Japanese text over it ?
And by the way is this Japanese text from a Japanese label release from the silver RoIO world or is it from a Japanese newspaper ?
Generally when a show is silvered we rarely got the exact photos from the gig

Bear in mind though that the photos have not yet been conclusively identified as being from the Paris Theatre 1971 recording date. The most convincing point are the curtains in the background of all photographs, which resemble both rear stage and safety curtains shown in this BBC archive photo of the stage and seating area.

The third picture on FB looks as though it is from a magazine with the text possibly a biog of each member.

The amount of research done by members here is quite impressive! You should all be working for the FBI!

Very cool! I love photos of the band from this era. ‘72 era Floyd looks great as well
          Favorite Bootlegs: Santa Monica - 5/1/1970, Brescia - 06/19/1971, Los Angeles - 09/22/1972, Boston - 06/18/1975, NYC - 07/02/1977

hm yes that also works surprisingly well, just 9 days before the BBC session, so right within that span of time we thought they must be from. What are your sources for it being a rehearsal (althought I trust you on this one)? Just weird that they rehearsed in London just one day before a show in Stockholm and just two days after Montreux. Why get it all to England just to go to Sweden the next day?
Your more complete versions of the pics, specifically Nick, do show that the background doesn't match BBC exactly, but I'm not sure. Thanks for those better copies anyway

Only speculating but they could make some rehearsals to set the BBC setlist prior the Sweden shows. The Sweden shows were maybe added at the last minute as often for this era. It makes sense since there is only two dates in the North of Europe. I think it's just maybe a case of opportunity like for the Moulin Rouge club in May 1971.
But , only speculating could be also at Granada Studios a couple of day before.

To give a bit of context, I'm not asserting anything but just giving the information I have.
To be complete, these photos (like so many others) come from the golden era of the pre-internet. When I first became interested in the Floyd, 35 years ago, I was immediately in contact with fans of the band who exchanged, lent or sold photos of the band in France (in Paris and the East of France) and in Luxembourg Ville (where bootlegs were not illegal at this time!).
I had the presence of mind to digitise almost all the documents that passed through my hands, thanks to the first scanning device at my school, which was-a-pain in-the-ass-to-use but very instructive.
I also noted the dates given by collectors, which turned out to be correct years later in 95% of cases. And I backed up all my media dozens of times.
I've done well (sorry for this self-congratulating moment) because many of them have passed away since and the physical copies have been lost in my hectic life ))

thanks for all the info, really apprechiate it. Yeah it could really just be one of those spontaneous things.
Funny that you mentioned Moulin Rouge in May, since I just recently investigated that and it seems it has to be some time arround August 1970, according to the drum set and David's guitar. It matches the equipment used in Saint Tropez on August 8 perfectly, which is the first document of David playing his white Stratocaster with black pickups, the last document being Paris on September 12 (there are no confirmed pics in between)
After that, for the US tour, David decided on the Black Strat as his main instrument for the next ten years (with the exception of using the Bill Lewis Custom for the Europe dates in the last two months of 1970)

Thanks for the uncropped individual photos, really nice to see and also the information on Command Studios.

What perhaps gives some extra weight to the photos being from Command Studios is the fact that in June 1971, BB King recorded some of his 'BB King In London' album there, which, incidentally, also lists Jerry Shirley as playing drums on one of the tracks.

It’s not beyond the realms of possibility that Gilmour's wearing of the BB King t-shirt is deliberate and not merely coincidence, as he may well have known that King had recorded there just three months earlier.

I also found a 24 minute BBC documentary from 1971 of BB King '...filmed in Piccadilly recording his BB King In London album...' (Command Studios were located in Piccadilly). Here again, similar pale-coloured stage curtains are visible within the first minute.

so cool; thanks for the epic story RarePinkFloyd; love David's t-shirt.
Perhaps with the help of Topaz Photo Enhanced AI I could remove the moire effects and upscale the photo in order to make an artwork a-la "Let It Be" with 4 photos of one of this '71 epic performance.

And by the way; a question for Azerty aka RarePinkFloyd, may I ask when Your updated site is visitable again?
