    The Floyd and the Dead

I grew up listening to Pink Floyd, and then discovered The Grateful Dead once I had Internet access. Last year, I read a couple of Blair Jackson's excellent books about the Dead and the fan culture surrounding them, and there are obviously some striking parallels between the two bands' origins and trajectories. I've just been listening to the GD podcast's episode on the 1972 Bickershaw festival - organised, somewhat improbably, by a young Jeremy Beadle - where their performance featured a Dark Star jam that could drop straight into Set The Controls, and a firework display designed by Nick and Roger's old housemate Peter Kuttner. Which made me wonder again...

Did the two bands - or their solo members - ever play at the same event? There are certainly some near misses, e.g. 1968-08-31 (PF were billed but cancelled; GD weren't billed but did play), 1972-05-21/22 (PF and post-Garcia NRPS both played).

I'd be interested to know this answer as well if anybody has it. I am obviously a huge Floyd Fan but also a big Grateful Dead fan as well.

The Dead also showed up at the infamous '73 Radio City show since they played in the area around the same date. I might be wrong but I think you can hear some people in the audience talk about it and maybe mention seeing them leave as well. There's a bunch of overlap with The Dead and Floyd and yet they somehow manage to stay apart for their existences for the most part. One can only imagine Gilmour walking onstage with the Dead in '89 .

And they converged on the Zabriskie point soundtrack of course.

I recorded the Dead’s set at Bickershaw and was interviewed in the podcast you mention. Having followed both bands since the 60s, I can’t recall any occasion when they shared an event (I may be wrong). Ratdog, Bob Weir’s post-Dead band, covered Matilda Mother so he was obviously aware of the Floyd
